ReenactmentAs we know there is limited archaeological evidence for Sub Roman settlements in Britannia in the 5th century let alone Scotti ones, right?
Well, no. Its largely a matter of interpreting the evidence we have. Many sites from our period were excavated years ago and without some of the resources available now. In recent times the information has been put together to create a picture of the 5th century as described by Ken Dark in Britain and the end of the Roman Empire and previously by Leslie Alcock in Arthurs Britain. I have recreated an impression of a Deisi noble from a warband based around the belief that the Deisi where settled as Foederati in South Wales in a similar way to the Saxons on the east coast of Britannia. This would be a continuation of Roman policy. This is obviously guesswork, but it is based on the evidence available. To what extent the Deisi continued their Irish culture is not known and probably never will be, but they continued to keep Irish names, speak the Irish language and archaeology in the area does turn up some items of a Irish nature. I have based my impression from contemporary information and also some images from slightly later (book of Kells etc). I can't guarantee that what you're seeing is exactly what a Deisi would look like but I hope to give the impression of one. |
